The Environmental Partnership has released its seventh annual report, highlighting the U.S. oil and natural gas industry's efforts to reduce methane emissions while increasing production. According to the report, methane emissions have decreased by over 40% in U.S. onshore production regions since 2015, despite a more than 50% rise in production.

Emily Hague, director of The Environmental Partnership, said, "Reducing methane emissions is an important and complex challenge—there’s no one-size-fits-all solution." She emphasized that the partnership aids operators in exploring various solutions and improving strategies for efficient and responsible energy delivery.

The Environmental Partnership includes members representing nearly 65% of U.S. onshore oil and natural gas production. It serves as a platform for companies to share best practices and develop innovative emission-reducing solutions across the supply chain. Vanessa Ryan, Chair of The Environmental Partnership and general manager of climate and engagement for Chevron, noted that reducing methane emissions enhances operational efficiencies by recovering lost products that can fuel the economy.

The 2025 TEP Annual Report highlights several achievements: participating companies conducted over 678,000 surveys at more than 199,000 sites with a leak occurrence rate of just 0.02%, marking an over 87% drop since 2018. Additionally, flare intensity among TEP members fell to 0.74% in 2024—a reduction exceeding 75% since 2019—even as production grew.

Beyond its existing performance programs, the report underscores the practical solutions TEP companies are implementing to advance operational excellence and environmental progress.

The American Petroleum Institute (API), which represents all segments of America's oil and natural gas industry including nearly 600 member companies, supports almost 11 million U.S. jobs. API has been instrumental in developing standards to enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability within the industry since its founding in 1919.
