A Gervais resident, Jairin Anzaldua-Ervin, 29, appeared in federal court following his arrest for allegedly assaulting a federal law enforcement officer near the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in South Portland.

Court documents state that on October 4, 2025, Anzaldua-Ervin was among several individuals trespassing on the driveway of the ICE building. Law enforcement reportedly issued multiple warnings to vacate the area. According to authorities, Anzaldua-Ervin responded by forcefully throwing a water bottle at an officer, striking them in the chest. He was subsequently taken into custody.

Scott E. Bradford, U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon, commented: “Throwing water bottles, or any object for that matter, at federal law enforcement officers is not protesting – it’s a crime – and perpetrators will be arrested and federally prosecuted. I thank the brave members of federal law enforcement who have protected federal employees and the ICE building for more than 110 consecutive nights.”

Since June 13, 2025, prosecutors have charged 30 individuals with federal crimes related to incidents at the ICE facility. The charges include assaulting federal officers, failure to comply with orders, and damage to government property.

Anzaldua-Ervin was released under conditions after his initial court appearance before a U.S. Magistrate Judge while he awaits further proceedings.

The felony charge of assaulting a federal officer carries a potential penalty of up to eight years in prison.

Officials note that a criminal complaint is an accusation and that defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
