Matthew L. Harvey has been sworn in as the United States Attorney for the Northern District of West Virginia. The ceremony took place in Martinsburg, with U.S. District Judge Gina M. Groh administering the oath of office. Harvey was nominated by President Trump on June 30, 2025, and confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 7, 2025.

“I am grateful to President Trump placing his trust in me to fulfill his promise to make our communities safe and support our officers,” said U.S. Attorney Harvey. “I am looking forward to building and strengthening partnerships with law enforcement in the district.”

As the chief federal law enforcement official for the Northern District of West Virginia, Harvey will oversee offices located in Wheeling, Martinsburg, Clarksburg, and Elkins. He leads a staff of 47 employees, which includes 20 attorneys and 27 support personnel.

The office is responsible for prosecuting federal crimes across 32 counties within the district. It also handles civil cases involving the United States and manages debt collection efforts on behalf of the government.

Before this appointment, Harvey served as Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney for twelve years, where he focused on prosecuting drug-related and violent crimes. His previous experience also includes work at a private law firm and roles as an assistant prosecuting attorney in both Berkeley and Kanawha Counties.

Harvey holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Bluefield State University and earned his Juris Doctorate from Appalachia School of Law.
