U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed an immigration detainer on Borko Stankovic, a Serbian national, after his arrest in Indiana for reckless homicide and criminal recklessness. Authorities allege that Stankovic was driving a semi-truck without a valid commercial driver’s license when he crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a Subaru Crosstrek. The driver of the Subaru, Jeffrey Eberly, died at the scene.
Stankovic has been living in the United States unlawfully since February 2011 after his nonimmigrant visa expired. He had previously been arrested in Long Island, New York, by the Nassau County Police Department for resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration.
Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin commented on the incident: “This senseless tragedy should NEVER have happened, and this man should still be alive today. Stankovic has been in this country ILLEGALLY since 2011 and has a history of violating the law, yet he remained free to continue engaging in dangerous behavior that ultimately resulted in the death of Jeffrey Eberly. Illegal aliens have no business operating 18 wheelers or semi-trucks on America’s highways. President Trump and Secretary Noem are making America’s roads safe again.”
Officials noted that this case is part of a broader pattern involving undocumented immigrants driving commercial vehicles without proper authorization, raising concerns about public safety.
