Ambassador Steven Fagin named civilian lead for Civil-Military Coordination Center

Ambassador Steven Fagin has been appointed as the civilian lead for the Civil-Military Coordination Center, which is tasked with supporting the implementation of the President’s 20 Point Peace Plan for Gaza. Ambassador Fagin is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, holding the rank of Minister Counselor.

Since May 2022, he has served as U.S. Ambassador to Yemen. His previous assignments include Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad from 2020 to 2021 and Principal Officer at the U.S. Consulate General in Erbil between 2018 and 2020. He also directed the State Department’s Office of Iranian Affairs from 2015 to 2018 and led the Regional Affairs Office in the South and Central Asia Bureau from 2013 to 2015.

Fagin began his Foreign Service career in 1997 and has held overseas posts in Brussels, Islamabad, Astana, Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Minsk, Tbilisi, and Cairo. In Washington, he served as a Pakistan Desk Officer and Special Assistant to then-Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Nick Burns.

He has received multiple Meritorious Honor Awards, Superior Honor Awards, Senior Performance Pay Awards, and two Presidential Meritorious Rank Awards. Ambassador Fagin holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Williams College and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Michigan. He was born in New York City, raised in New Jersey, and resides in Washington, DC.
