The United States has announced nearly $12.6 million in additional emergency aid for Jamaica and Haiti following Hurricane Melissa. The funding aims to support ongoing relief operations in the region.
In Jamaica, more than $10 million will be used to clear debris, restore access to isolated areas, and provide shelter, emergency healthcare, child protection, water, sanitation, hygiene, and food assistance. In Haiti, an extra $2.5 million will fund similar relief efforts for those impacted by the hurricane.
This new commitment brings the total U.S. emergency assistance related to Hurricane Melissa to nearly $37 million across the affected region. This includes over $22 million for Jamaica, $11 million for Haiti, $3 million for Cuba, and $500,000 for The Bahamas. The funding has supported Disaster Assistance Recovery Teams (DART) as well as search-and-rescue teams from Los Angeles and Fairfax Counties working on the ground.
The State Department stated: "The United States remains steadfast in its commitment to helping our neighbors recover from this disaster and will continue to explore additional ways to provide meaningful assistance during this critical time."
