A recent poll by Feeding America highlights widespread concern about the impact of the government shutdown on hunger and food access across the United States. As many families deal with missed paychecks and disruptions to SNAP benefits, the survey conducted by PerryUndem from October 31 to November 2, 2025, reveals that 72% of Americans are worried about the shutdown. Additionally, 73% believe a significant number of people are adversely affected.

Linda Nageotte, president and chief operating officer at Feeding America, said, "Across the country, communities are feeling the real, human impact the shutdown is having on their neighbors and communities." She emphasized that families, seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities continue to show resilience during these challenging times.

The poll also indicates that a majority of respondents foresee an increase in hunger (77%), a rise in food bank usage (91%), and more families skipping meals (83%) or opting for less healthy foods (85%). Furthermore, 79% of those surveyed think lawmakers should ensure SNAP benefits continue during the shutdown.

In response to growing needs, food banks have increased their efforts significantly. During the week of October 27 alone, there was a nearly 325% rise in food purchases through Feeding America's Grocery Purchase Program compared to the previous year.

Nageotte noted that while steps are being taken to fund SNAP for November partially, many individuals face difficult choices due to delayed benefits and missed wages. She urged leaders to act swiftly to resolve the shutdown for people's dignity and stability.

The survey was conducted online with 1,021 U.S. adults using Ipsos KnowledgePanel, with a margin of error of ±3.1 percentage points.

Feeding America remains dedicated to combating hunger through its network of food banks and advocacy for improved food security legislation. More information can be found at FeedingAmerica.org.
