New Kensington woman sentenced to home detention for illegal firearm purchases

A New Kensington resident, Barbara Miller, was sentenced in federal court for violating federal firearms laws through straw purchasing. The sentencing took place on October 16, 2025, and was announced by First Assistant United States Attorney Troy Rivetti.

Miller, age 33, received a sentence of time served and will serve one year of home detention. The case was overseen by United States District Judge Cathy Bissoon.

Court documents show that Miller purchased firearms from several federally licensed dealers on three occasions in 2020 within the Western District of Pennsylvania. She falsely stated she was buying the firearms for herself but was actually acquiring them for another individual.

Assistant United States Attorney Kelly M. Locher represented the government in this case. Rivetti acknowledged the investigative work done by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives as well as the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General.

"Troy Rivetti commended the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Miller."
