A woman from Pinedale, New Mexico, has been indicted on federal charges in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred earlier this year. Court documents state that Mabelene Grey, 45, who is an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, is accused of intentionally shooting and killing John Doe on June 30, 2025.
Grey faces charges of second degree murder as well as using and carrying a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence. She will remain under conditions of release while awaiting trial. No trial date has been set at this time. If convicted, Grey could receive a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and up to life imprisonment.
Acting U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Justin A. Garris, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office, announced the indictment.
The case was investigated by the Gallup Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office with support from the Navajo Nation Police Department and the Navajo Department of Criminal Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Amy Mondragon is handling prosecution.
"An indictment is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law," according to officials.
