President Donald J. Trump has signed an Executive Order instructing the Secretary of State and the Secretary of the Treasury to assess whether certain chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood should be classified as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs) and Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs).
The move is aimed at addressing what the administration describes as a transnational network that supports terrorism and destabilization efforts against United States interests and its allies in the Middle East.
According to President Trump, "President Trump is confronting the Muslim Brotherhood’s transnational network, which fuels terrorism and destabilization campaigns against U.S. interests and allies in the Middle East."
The White House states that these actions are part of broader efforts to protect Americans and reinforce national security measures abroad. The administration says it will continue to pursue strong counterterrorism policies to safeguard American citizens and promote global stability.
"President Trump continues to prioritize robust counterterrorism measures to protect Americans and strengthen national security against foreign threats, while promoting peace and stability around the world," according to a statement from the White House.
The executive order initiates a process involving multiple agencies, but no specific chapters have yet been designated under these classifications.
