MAMTAKIM Inc, based in Elizabeth, New Jersey, has issued a recall for its BELEVINI brand Dried Whole Smelts Salted (KORUSHKA) due to concerns about potential contamination with Clostridium botulinum. The affected product is sold in 5.29 oz (150 g) transparent vacuum-sealed plastic pouches and was distributed only at Cherry Hill Emmons retail store in Brooklyn, New York.
According to the company, the recall was initiated after an inspection and analysis by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found that the fish had not been properly eviscerated. This condition can create an environment where Clostridium botulinum may grow.
"Consumers are strongly advised not to consume this product, even if it does not appear spoiled," MAMTAKIM Inc stated in its announcement.
Clostridium botulinum can cause botulism, a serious form of food poisoning that may result in symptoms such as general weakness, dizziness, double vision, trouble speaking or swallowing, difficulty breathing, muscle weakness, abdominal distension, and constipation. "People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention," the company said.
No illnesses related to this product have been reported so far.
Customers who purchased the recalled BELEVINI Dried Whole Smelts Salted (KORUSHKA) are advised to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund and avoid consuming it. For further questions, consumers can contact MAMTAKIM Inc at (718) 596-9577 or visit their office at 888 Magnolia Avenue, Elizabeth, NJ 07201 USA.
