Deputy Secretary Landau meets South Korean official to discuss alliance modernization

Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau met with Republic of Korea First Vice Foreign Minister Park Yoonjoo in Washington. The meeting focused on recent developments in the U.S.-ROK relationship, following President Trump’s state visit to Gyeongju and the APEC Summit held from October 29-30.

According to Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott, “The Deputy Secretary and the First Vice Foreign Minister celebrated the success of President Trump’s historic October 29-30 state visit to Gyeongju that included the APEC Summit. They discussed the implementation of the U.S.-ROK Joint Fact Sheet, which includes modernizing the U.S.-ROK Alliance—the linchpin of peace, security, and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula and throughout the Indo-Pacific region for more than 70 years.”

During their discussion, Deputy Secretary Landau acknowledged South Korea's increased investment in American manufacturing sectors such as shipbuilding. Both officials highlighted achievements made by the U.S.-ROK Business Travel and Visas Working Group. Pigott stated, “The Deputy Secretary reiterated that Korean investment contributes significantly to U.S. reindustrialization efforts.”

The talks underscored ongoing cooperation between both countries in economic development and regional security.
