The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has completed its statutory obligation of conducting comprehensive "five-year reviews" for three Superfund sites in Connecticut during the 2025 Fiscal Year. These reviews are part of the agency's efforts to evaluate and ensure the effectiveness of cleanup operations at sites listed on the National Priorities List.

According to EPA, these reviews are conducted every five years after a cleanup is implemented to assess whether further actions are needed to protect human health and the environment. The recent evaluations confirmed that current remedies continue to be effective, although recommendations for follow-up actions were made where necessary.

The sites reviewed include Old Southington Landfill in Southington, Raymark Industries, Inc. in Stratford, and Solvents Recovery Service of New England, also located in Southington. The full details of these reviews can be accessed on EPA's website.

The Superfund program was established by Congress in 1980 to address complex hazardous waste sites across the country. It involves multiple phases such as site investigation, cleanup design and construction, future use consideration, and post-cleanup monitoring. The primary mission of EPA throughout this process is safeguarding human health and the environment.
