U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Anzalduas International Bridge stopped an attempt to smuggle firearms into Mexico, intercepting 30 unreported pistols and 61 magazines during an outbound inspection.
Port Director Carlos Rodriguez of the Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry stated, "This significant seizure of weapons illustrates our commitment to continue working toward limiting access to firearms to the criminal element in Mexico."
On December 3, CBP officers inspected a grey Chevrolet Silverado as it tried to leave the United States for Mexico. Officers used nonintrusive inspection equipment before conducting a physical search, which revealed the concealed firearms and magazines inside the vehicle. Additionally, $3,000 in U.S. currency believed to be illicit proceeds was seized.
The vehicle, weapons, and magazines were handed over to Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers. The driver was arrested and taken to county jail.
CBP is responsible for enforcing laws related to travel and trade at U.S. borders and aims to enhance national security through various means including technology and cooperation among agencies.
