Michele Beckwith Acting U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of California
Eric Grant has been sworn in as the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of California following his court appointment. Chief U.S. District Judge Troy L. Nunley administered the oath of office, confirming Grant’s role as the chief federal law enforcement officer for the district. Grant was initially appointed as interim U.S. Attorney by Attorney General Pam Bondi on August 11, 2025, for a period of 120 days. The judges of the Eastern District have now re-appointed him under 28 U.S.C. § 546(d).
Grant brings significant experience from his prior roles at the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., where he served as an Attorney-Adviser in the Office of Legal Counsel from 1991 to 1993 and later as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) from 2017 to 2021. In that capacity, he supervised over one hundred litigators handling both civil and criminal matters.
“I have been honored to lead an excellent team of dedicated attorneys and other public servants in our shared mission to enhance public safety and the rule of law in the Eastern District of California. We have accomplished a great deal over the last several months, and our work continues. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues and with federal, state, local, and tribal partners to accomplish that mission,” said U.S. Attorney Grant.
Beyond his government service, Grant has worked extensively in private practice in both Washington, D.C., and Sacramento, arguing cases before courts including the U.S. Supreme Court and California Supreme Court.
He previously clerked for Chief Justice Warren E. Burger (retired) and Associate Justice Clarence Thomas during the Supreme Court’s October 1994 Term, as well as for Judge Edith H. Jones on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.
A native of Modesto who raised his family in Sacramento County, Grant holds degrees in economics (1986) and law (1990) from University of California, Berkeley.
The United States Attorney is responsible for prosecuting federal crimes and representing the government in civil litigation across a region that includes 34 counties stretching from Oregon’s border southward toward Los Angeles County line, with offices located in Sacramento, Fresno, and Bakersfield.
