The U.S. House of Representatives has moved forward with legislation aimed at improving data collection in western watersheds, where snowpack is a key factor in water supply. The bill, H.R. 3857, known as the Snow Water Supply Forecasting Reauthorization Act of 2025, seeks to enhance the use of new technologies to measure mountain snowpack more accurately.

House Committee on Natural Resources Chairman Bruce Westerman (R-Ark.) commented on the advancement of the bill: “H.R. 3857 will promote the use of emerging technologies to increase accuracy in measuring mountain snowpack, a vital source of freshwater for many states. I commend Rep. Hurd for his commitment to ensure that America has accurate information on freshwater sources."

The legislation was introduced by U.S. Representative Jeff Hurd (R-Colo.). It reauthorizes programs that observe snow levels and provide critical information for water forecasting and drought preparedness.
