U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Gibraltar Station arrested Silvio Berge, a 60-year-old German national, on December 5 in Monroe, Michigan. Berge had been convicted of criminal sexual conduct with a child after he was caught soliciting a minor for sex in March. The person he believed to be a teenager was actually an undercover officer.
The investigation and conviction were the result of cooperation between Homeland Security Investigations special agents, victim assistance specialists, and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Violent Internet Predator Exploitation Response Team (VIPER). After serving nearly nine months in Monroe County Jail, Berge was released and immediately taken into custody by U.S. Border Patrol agents because his crimes led to the revocation of his visa. He will be deported from the United States.
Detroit Sector Deputy Chief Patrol Agent Javier Geronimo, Jr. stated: "Our agents, working closely with our law enforcement partners, continue to strengthen border security and protect the communities we serve. This case highlights the comprehensive nature of our immigration enforcement mission, from apprehending those who attempt to illegally enter the United States to aggressively targeting individuals who violate our nation's laws and endanger public safety. When a person abuses the privilege of legal entry, we act decisively, including the revocation of their immigration status, to ensure accountability and safeguard our communities."
U.S. Customs and Border Protection is responsible for enforcing safe travel and trade at America’s borders as part of its broader mission as the nation’s largest law enforcement organization.
