ICE officers in Baltimore have arrested Kevin Alexis Mendez-Ortiz, a Honduran national who entered the United States illegally in 2022 and was involved in a recent head-on collision in Prince George’s County, Maryland. The incident occurred on November 9, when Mendez crossed into oncoming traffic and struck another vehicle before fleeing the scene. The passenger of the other vehicle, a woman who wishes to remain anonymous, suffered multiple severe injuries including broken bones, organ damage, and a collapsed lung. She is expected to face an extended recovery period.
Mendez was later cited by the Prince George's County Police Department for several violations related to the accident. These included driving without a license or registration, failing to stop at the scene of an accident with bodily injury, not providing insurance information, unsafe lane changes after a hit-and-run collision, failure to control speed to avoid a crash, and disobeying traffic devices and lane directions.
According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Mendez had been apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol near Hidalgo, Texas on September 30, 2022. He was issued a notice to appear in immigration court and released into the country under his own recognizance.
Jeremy Bacon, acting Field Office Director for ICE Baltimore stated: “This tragic incident underscores why ICE remains steadfast in its mission to identify, apprehend and remove illegal aliens who pose a threat to public safety. A U.S. citizen suffered devastating injuries because of the reckless behavior of an illegal alien who had no lawful right to be in our country. The Baltimore field office extends our deepest hopes for our fellow citizen’s full and speedy recovery. We will continue working tirelessly to keep our communities safe from individuals who endanger the public through irresponsible and unlawful actions.”
