U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon visited Maple Elementary School in Cambridge, Maryland, as part of the Department of Education’s History Rocks! Trail to Independence tour. The event is one of several taking place across the country to mark the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence and aims to improve civic literacy among students.

During her visit, Secretary McMahon participated in interactive history games with students. The activities were designed to help students better understand America’s founding principles and the responsibilities that come with citizenship. Kellyanne Conway, a member of the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, also attended and delivered remarks.

“It was an honor to join students and educators today in Maryland and participate in activities celebrating the state’s contributions to the founding of our nation,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon. “Civic education is essential to preparing the next generation to understand their rights, responsibilities, and the principles that unite us as Americans. Through History Rocks!, we are helping students connect with our nation’s history in meaningful ways and empowering them to take an active role in shaping its future.”

“As we prepare to celebrate 250 years of American independence, it is critical that students understand both the freedoms we enjoy and the responsibility that comes with them,” said U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission Member Kellyanne Conway. “History Rocks! gives young people the opportunity to appreciate our shared history and recognize the power of civic participation.”

The History Rocks! initiative is part of a broader effort by the Department of Education for America 250 celebrations. This work is coordinated through partnerships with organizations such as America First Policy Institute, Turning Point USA, Hillsdale College, and over 50 other national and state groups focused on expanding civic education opportunities for students.

As part of this initiative, Secretary McMahon and other officials plan visits to schools in all 50 states. These visits will highlight hands-on civics instruction, offer opportunities for student engagement as future leaders, and include discussions with community members about improving civic education nationwide.
