On December 26, 1776, General George Washington’s Continental Army achieved a significant victory at the Battle of Trenton. This event is considered one of the pivotal moments in American history. The battle came just months after the Declaration of Independence was signed and during a period when the fight for freedom was facing severe challenges. The Continental Army had been pushed from New York, forced through New Jersey, and ended up in Pennsylvania in a state of exhaustion and lacking supplies.
General Washington recognized that only a bold move could change the situation. He identified an opportunity to strike against Hessian troops—German soldiers allied with the British—stationed in Trenton, New Jersey. On Christmas night, despite harsh winter conditions, Washington led 2,400 soldiers across the Delaware River. The crossing took 11 hours through icy waters as artillery, horses, and provisions were transported by boat.
The following morning, Washington’s forces advanced on Trenton from two directions. After two hours of combat involving artillery and infantry attacks that caught the Hessians by surprise, about 900 Hessian mercenaries surrendered to the Continental Army.
The success at Trenton is credited with restoring morale among American forces and supporters of independence.
