The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded Maui County a $3,607,065 grant to establish the first waste collection centers in West Maui. This initiative aims to divert at least 1,794 tons of materials from landfills and dump sites annually. Claire Trombadore, Director of the EPA Pacific Southwest Land, Chemicals, and Redevelopment Division, said that the project addresses a critical need for collection centers in communities affected by the 2023 wildfires. The grant will allow Maui County to acquire two parcels on the island's upper west side to develop collection centers for green waste, recyclables, and bulky items.

Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen emphasized the importance of strengthening recycling systems and noted that this investment is a significant milestone for sustainability and environmental protection. Shayne Agawa, Director of Environmental Management for Maui County, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to provide essential services to residents recovering from the wildfires while mitigating potential environmental hazards.

The EPA's Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling (SWIFR) grant program supports economic development by funding projects that optimize material collection and improve recycling infrastructure nationwide. More information about these grants can be found on the EPA’s website.
