EPA Regional Administrator Michael Martucci recently visited Puerto Rico to assess environmental progress and strengthen partnerships. The trip focused on Superfund work, enforcement initiatives, and water infrastructure investments. "My trip to Puerto Rico highlighted the incredible impact of collaboration among the Governor Jenniffer González-Colón, mayors, government entities and industry partners," Martucci said. He emphasized cooperative federalism as a path to significant advancements.

During his visit, Martucci met with Governor Jennifer Gonzalez-Colon to discuss key issues like energy grid improvements and modernization of water systems. A notable achievement was the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority's (PRASA) investment of over $29 million in the Dorado Wastewater Treatment Plant to increase sewer capacity. In Dorado, sewage management issues were addressed through discussions with community members and PRASA partners.

Martucci also visited the Cidra Groundwater Contamination site where a modern treatment technique is being used to expedite cleanup by converting harmful materials into gases for removal. Additionally, he toured the former CAPECO site, now operated by Puerto Rico Energy LLC. This visit showcased redevelopment efforts following a catastrophic fire in 2009.

In Dorado's "Quintas de Dorado" area, wastewater capacity issues were discussed under the Clean Water Act framework. EPA collaborates with local authorities to enforce sewer discharge regulations crucial for public health protection. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency remains committed to its mission of safeguarding human health and the environment while promoting economic growth.
