Gusto Group recalls shrimp paste due to elevated lead risk

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

Gusto Group Inc., based in Paterson, New Jersey, has announced a recall of its [Klong Kone] Shrimp Paste in two sizes—454 grams (1 pound) and 910 grams (2 pounds)—due to possible contamination with elevated levels of lead.

The affected shrimp paste was distributed between April 2023 and December 2023 to two retailers: Golden Land in Des Moines, Iowa, and Terri Lee Oriental Groceries in Maywood, New Jersey. There were no online sales of the product. The recalled items are packaged in white plastic jars with red caps and labeled as packed and distributed by P. Prateepthong 2000 from Thailand.

According to Gusto Group Inc., "Short term exposures to very low levels of lead may not elicit any symptoms. It is possible that increased blood lead levels may be the only apparent sign of lead exposure. Additional signs and symptoms of lead exposure are more likely with acute exposure to higher levels of lead or chronic exposure to lead. While lead can affect nearly every bodily system, its effects depend upon the amount and duration of lead exposure and age/ body weight. If a child is exposed to enough lead for a protracted period of time (e.g., weeks to months) permanent damage to the central nervous system may occur. This can result in learning disorders, developmental defects, and other long-term health problems. For adults, chronic lead exposure is associated with kidney dysfunction, hypertension, and neurocognitive effects."

The recall follows a report involving four children who became ill after consuming the product; symptoms included diarrhea and elevated blood lead levels. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) collected samples from retail locations for laboratory analysis, which confirmed that the products contained elevated levels of lead. Distribution of this lot has been halted while an investigation into the cause continues.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled shrimp paste are advised to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. For further information or questions about the recall, consumers can contact Gusto Group Inc. at (862) 264-6774 or via email at ings@gustofood.com during business hours Monday through Friday.
