Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a conversation with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on January 9, 2026. According to Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott, the two leaders addressed ongoing U.S.-led initiatives aimed at reaching a negotiated resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
In addition to discussing efforts related to the war, Rubio and Rutte also focused on the importance of Arctic security for all NATO member countries.
"The two leaders discussed the ongoing U.S.-led efforts to bring a negotiated end to the Russia-Ukraine war. They also discussed the significance of Arctic security for all NATO Allies," said Pigott.
