Republican Study Committee unveils budget plan prioritizing American agriculture

The Republican Study Committee (RSC) has released a new budget proposal focused on supporting American agriculture while promoting fiscal responsibility. The plan highlights priorities that align with those of the House Committee on Agriculture and the broader GOP conference.

House Committee on Agriculture Chairman Glenn “GT” Thompson stated, “I applaud Chairman Pfluger and Rep. Beth Van Duyne for their work in aligning the Republican Study Committee budget with the priorities of the broader GOP conference regarding agriculture, our nation’s most important industry. With over 90% of planted acres located in Republican districts, supporting American agriculture must remain a key goal of our party. This budget is proof that a fiscally responsible path to prosperity doesn't have to come at the expense of our hard-working farmers and ranchers. Thank you to RSC for reflecting the needs of this key constituency in their new budget. I look forward to working with them to advance many of these policy goals in Farm Bill 2.0.”

RSC Chairman August Pfluger commented, “Our farmers and ranchers understand what Washington refuses to accept: you can't spend money you don't have. These are the people who feed America while managing their own bottom lines and making hard choices every single day. The RSC Budget shows we can get our fiscal house in order and support the agricultural communities that are the backbone of this country. It's common sense, and it's long overdue. We look forward to continuing the work for hardworking Americans alongside Chairman Thompson and the Agriculture Committee.”

Beth Van Duyne, Chair of the RSC Budget and Spending Task Force, added, “The RSC Budget reins in Washington’s out-of-control spending and eliminates waste, fraud, and abuse across all levels of the federal government. We are returning to pre-pandemic levels of spending, advancing pro-growth tax policies, slashing regulatory burdens, and unleashing American energy. It is our fiscal responsibility to not only deliver a balanced budget but get the federal government out of the way to strengthen the economy so families, small businesses, seniors, and farmers can thrive.”

The RSC's "Budget to Restore America's Golden Age" includes measures such as providing tax relief for family farmers and small businesses, expanding market access for U.S. agricultural products, reducing regulatory burdens on farmers, restoring flexibility for producers to adapt to changing conditions and market demands, and maintaining a reliable farm safety net designed not to distort markets.

The House Agriculture Committee plays a central role in shaping national food security policies by addressing agricultural needs as well as environmental challenges (official website). The committee oversees federal policies related to agriculture—including rural development programs—and is responsible for major legislation like the Farm Bill (official website). Under current leadership by Glenn Thompson as chairman during the 119th Congress (official website), its membership addresses issues impacting rural communities across multiple regions (official website). The committee also operates through specialized subcommittees focused on various aspects of agricultural policy (official website).

Founded in 1820 with just seven members—reflecting early recognition of agriculture’s importance—the House Agriculture Committee continues its oversight over programs such as commodity supports and nutrition assistance today (official website).
