The United States government has announced new terrorist designations targeting chapters of the Muslim Brotherhood in Lebanon, Jordan, and Egypt. This move is described as a first step supporting President Trump’s commitment to eliminate the capabilities and operations of Muslim Brotherhood chapters that are considered threats to the United States, as outlined in Executive Order 14362.

According to the Department of State, the Lebanese Muslim Brotherhood has been designated both as a Foreign Terrorist Organization and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT). The group’s leader, Muhammad Fawzi Taqqosh, has also been named an SDGT. At the same time, the Department of the Treasury designated both the Egyptian and Jordanian branches of the Muslim Brotherhood as SDGTs for their role in providing material support to Hamas.

“These designations reflect the opening actions of an ongoing, sustained effort to thwart Muslim Brotherhood chapters’ violence and destabilization wherever it occurs. The United States will use all available tools to deprive these Muslim Brotherhood chapters of the resources to engage in or support terrorism,” stated officials.

Further details on these actions can be found in fact sheets released by both the Department of State and Department of the Treasury.
