U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement reports arrests and deportations in January updates

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shared updates on recent enforcement actions and expressed criticism of opposition to its operations in a series of posts on January 18, 2026.

In one post, ICE reported the arrest of an individual for smuggling undocumented immigrants across the border. According to the agency, "On Jan. 8, ICE Homeland Security Investigations special agents arrested an illegal alien from Mexico for alien smuggling. The individual facilitated the smuggling of 6 illegal aliens across the Mexican border in June 2025." This action reflects ongoing efforts by ICE to combat human smuggling along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Later that day, ICE addressed public demonstrations against its activities, stating on January 18, 2026: "When anti-ICE agitators impede our operations, they’re defending criminal illegal alien child sex predators." The agency's statement highlights tensions between immigration enforcement authorities and some activist groups who oppose their methods and objectives.

In another update posted at 20:05 UTC, ICE announced a deportation following a criminal conviction. The agency stated: "RAPIST DEPORTED ICE @ERONewOrleans’ Alexandria office deported Jose Flores Gomez, a criminal illegal alien from El Salvador after he served 93 months in prison for rape."

ICE is responsible for enforcing federal laws governing border control, customs, trade and immigration to promote homeland security and public safety. Its operations frequently attract scrutiny and protest from advocacy groups concerned about civil liberties and immigrant rights.
