U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin, who serves as the Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and is a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, has issued a statement following his vote against a government funding package that includes appropriations for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Durbin stated, "As we have said, Democrats are ready to pass the five bipartisan government funding bills now, but the DHS bill needs serious work. I’m glad that the White House has finally come to the table and is working with Leader Schumer to avoid a partial government shutdown, rein in ICE, and find legislative solutions to restore order and public safety."

He further commented on actions taken by the current administration: "This Administration’s campaign of terror has led to deaths, serious injuries, and the detention of innocent people. Americans are demanding change—we must deliver for them."

The funding bill in question forms part of ongoing negotiations between Congress and the White House over budget priorities related to homeland security.
