The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida joined law enforcement officials at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Miami Field Office to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the deaths of Special Agents Daniel Alfin and Laura Schwartzenberger. The agents were killed in the line of duty on February 2, 2021, while executing a federal search warrant in Sunrise as part of an investigation into violent crimes against children. Three other agents were also wounded during the incident.
A ceremony took place at a memorial tree and bench that includes a commemorative plaque. FBI Chaplain Rabbi Claudio Kogan gave an invocation, and Special Agent in Charge Brett Skiles shared memories about Alfin and Schwartzenberger from their time at the Academy, in the field, and with their families.
Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Kash Patel was present and spoke to those gathered. “He spoke of his personal commitment to remember Dan and Laura each day, honoring their dedication to the FBI mission, their resolve to protect the public, and their enduring example that justice will overcome evil.” Director Patel also announced approval for a permanent memorial dedicated to both agents.
U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones for the Southern District of Florida stated: “Five years later, the loss of Dan Alfin and Laura Schwartzenberger is still felt across our law enforcement family. They ran toward danger to protect the most vulnerable, and they paid the ultimate price in service to others. Today we honor their courage, stand with their families and colleagues, and recommit ourselves to the mission they lived every day, protecting our community and upholding the rule of law.”
The event highlighted ongoing support for law enforcement families affected by such tragedies.
