A New Haven man has been sentenced to 90 months in federal prison for firearm and drug trafficking offenses. The announcement was made by David X. Sullivan, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut.

Diego Ezequiel Garro, 24, received his sentence from U.S. District Judge Kari A. Dooley in Bridgeport. In addition to the prison term, Garro will serve three years of supervised release.

Court documents show that on February 18, 2023, West Haven Police arrested Garro after finding him asleep in a parked vehicle with a loaded 9mm handgun equipped with an extended magazine containing 34 rounds on the passenger seat. During the arrest, Garro attempted to escape in his vehicle and dragged one officer several feet before being taken into custody. Officers recovered the firearm and found fentanyl, cocaine, marijuana intended for distribution, drug packaging materials and scales, as well as about $1,300 in cash during a search of the car.

Further investigation determined that between December 2022 and January 2023, an individual acting under Garro’s direction purchased multiple semi-automatic handguns—including the one seized—and provided them to Garro in exchange for narcotics.

Garro has been detained since October 3, 2024. He pleaded guilty on August 29, 2025 to four counts of firearm trafficking and two counts related to possession with intent to distribute controlled substances.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and West Haven Police Department investigated this case. Assistant U.S. Attorney John T. Pierpont Jr. prosecuted it.
