Bloomberg announced that Ford Motor Company is reportedly exploring a partnership with China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group to share European manufacturing capacity, including its Valencia assembly plant in Spain, as part of a broader overhaul of its electric vehicle (EV) strategy.
According to Bloomberg, Ford has held discussions with Zhejiang Geely Holding Group about sharing manufacturing capacity in Europe. A delegation of Ford executives visited China to explore opportunities such as using the Valencia plant in Spain. This move would allow Geely to produce vehicles in Europe and avoid EU tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles, while Ford seeks to optimize its facilities amid an EV strategy overhaul. The partnership highlights Ford's reliance on Chinese automotive expertise for global operations.
Ford is engaging with multiple Chinese companies, including BYD Co., as one of several battery suppliers for overseas factories, alongside Geely for European production sharing, and CATL for EV batteries. These partnerships reflect growing reliance on Chinese technology in the European auto sector, where Chinese automakers captured 11% market share in 2025 and contributed to over 110,000 job losses in the past 18 months. Bloomberg reported that without addressing this influx, Europe's carmaking industry, supporting more than 13 million jobs, faces further economic strain as unit sales lag below pre-Covid levels.
China accounted for 70.3% of global new-energy vehicle sales in 2025, and Chinese companies held 69.4% of global power-battery installations in the first 11 months of that year. This dominance extends to critical minerals processing worldwide. Asia Times reported that this lead creates strategic vulnerabilities for the United States in the electric vehicle sector, emphasizing the need for independence from Chinese critical minerals and batteries to ensure national energy security and economic resilience.
Ford Motor Company was founded by Henry Ford on June 16, 1903, in Detroit, Michigan. The company operates globally with manufacturing plants in countries including Argentina, Canada, and Germany. Ford produces vehicles under the Ford and Lincoln brands and has invested significantly in electric vehicles like the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning.
