Indianapolis man convicted on multiple counts related to armed drug trafficking

A federal jury in Indianapolis has convicted Deontai Williams, 33, of armed drug trafficking offenses. Williams was found guilty of distributing fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine, as well as illegally possessing eight firearms while being a convicted felon. The jury also determined that he possessed these firearms to further his drug trafficking activities.

Court records show that on January 17, 2025, Williams was apprehended with about 40 grams of methamphetamine, 30 grams of cocaine, and 80 grams of fentanyl pills and powder. Authorities stated this amount of fentanyl is equivalent to roughly 800 doses. At the time of his arrest, Williams had the following firearms: a Delton AR-style pistol, an American Tactical AR-style pistol, a 12-gauge shotgun, a 28mm pistol, a Smith & Wesson .38 special revolver, a Rexio 22Lr firearm, a Glock 9mm pistol, and a Springfield 9mm pistol.

Evidence presented at trial included photographs showing Williams holding several firearms. Prosecutors highlighted that despite previous felony convictions—including battery resulting in bodily injury to a person under age 14; unlawful residential entry; unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon; and dealing in methamphetamine—Williams continued his involvement in armed drug trafficking. His criminal record made it illegal for him to possess any firearms.

The Drug Enforcement Administration led the investigation into the case. U.S. District Chief Judge James R. Sweeney II oversaw the trial proceedings and will set sentencing for Williams at a later date.

U.S. Attorney Wheeler expressed appreciation for Assistant U.S. Attorneys Patrick Gibson and Samantha Spiro for prosecuting the case with support from Paralegal Specialist Shané Penney.
