A Chicago man has been sentenced to more than four years in federal prison for robbing a United States Postal Service letter carrier in the city’s Logan Square neighborhood. The incident took place on March 31, 2020, when Donte Hughes and another individual confronted the carrier while she was delivering mail on the 1900 block of North Albany Avenue. According to authorities, one person restrained the carrier while Hughes demanded and took official USPS property from her pocket before both suspects fled.
Hughes, who was already on probation for a firearm-related conviction at the time of the robbery, was arrested in 2024. He pleaded guilty last year to a federal robbery charge. On February 4, 2026, U.S. District Judge Jeffrey I. Cummings sentenced him to four years and three months in prison.
The sentencing was announced by Andrew S. Boutros, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Mary T. Johnson, Acting Inspector-in-Charge of the Chicago Division of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. The Chicago Police Department provided assistance during the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Chang represented the government in this case.
