A federal grand jury in Columbia has indicted Tyrel Mack, 29, of Florence, on seven counts of physically assaulting children at a daycare facility located on Shaw Air Force Base near Sumter. The indictment was presented by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
According to the indictment, Mack worked at a child development and youth center that provides care for children of U.S. Air Force service members and their families. In November 2025, he was assigned to a classroom with children aged three to five years old. The charges allege that Mack assaulted four different minor victims on seven occasions by kicking, hitting, striking, and intentionally stepping on them. All alleged victims were under five years old.
If convicted, Mack could face up to one year in prison for each charge.
The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Airforce Security Forces Squadron. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Scott Matthews and Elle E. Klein are prosecuting the case.
“All charges in the indictment are merely accusations and defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.”
