Kansas man convicted for illegal possession of firearm after police chase

A federal jury in Muskogee, Oklahoma, has found Ramone Antuane Newman, 36, of Olathe, Kansas, guilty of illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition. The verdict was reached on February 18, 2026, after a two-day trial.

Evidence presented during the trial showed that on February 2, 2024, Newman tried to escape law enforcement during a high-speed chase. During the pursuit, he threw a Glock handgun and a magazine loaded with four rounds from his vehicle. Authorities apprehended Newman near the entrance to the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant and recovered both the firearm and magazine in the area where they were discarded. At the time of this incident, Newman had already been convicted of a felony punishable by more than one year in prison, which barred him from having firearms or ammunition.

Multiple agencies participated in investigating the case. These included the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), McAlester Police Department, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, McAlester Army Ammunition Plant Police Department, Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Office, Savanna Police Department, and Choctaw Lighthorse Police.

The trial was overseen by Senior District Judge Ronald A. White in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. Judge White ordered that a presentence report be completed before scheduling sentencing. Until then, Newman will remain in U.S. Marshals custody.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kevin Gross and Jonathan E. Soverly prosecuted the case.
