Preliminary data from the June 2025 annual survey on foreign portfolio holdings of U.S. securities has been released by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, in collaboration with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. The data is available on the Treasury’s website at https://home.treasury.gov/data/treasury-international-capital-tic-system/us-liabilities-to-foreigners-from-holdings-of-us-securities. Final results, which may include revisions and additional details, are scheduled for release on April 30, 2026. The next annual survey will report on holdings as of June 2026, with preliminary results expected by February 26, 2027.
Complementary surveys that track U.S. holdings of foreign securities are also conducted annually. Data from the most recent such survey, covering year-end 2025 holdings, is being processed and preliminary findings are anticipated by August 31, 2026.
The survey measured total foreign holdings of U.S. securities at $35,334 billion as of June 30, 2025. This figure includes $19,843 billion in U.S. equities, $13,839 billion in long-term debt securities—of which $1,626 billion are asset-backed securities (ABS) and $12,213 billion are non-ABS—and $1,652 billion in short-term debt securities.
For comparison, as of June 30, 2024 total foreign holdings stood at $30,881 billion: $16,878 billion in equities; $12,688 billion in long-term debt; and $1,314 billion in short-term debt.
Long-term debt securities refer to those with an original maturity over one year. Asset-backed securities are supported by pools such as residential mortgages or credit card receivables and typically repay both principal and interest regularly.
Among major investing countries into the United States as of June 30, 2025:
- The United Kingdom held a total of $3,461 billion ($2,056B equities; $80B ABS; $1,233B other long-term debt; $93B short-term).
- Cayman Islands reported holdings totaling $3,177 billion.
- Canada’s total was measured at $2,898 billion.
- Japan held assets valued at $2,883 billion.
- Luxembourg accounted for a total holding value of $2,640 billion.
Other notable holders included Ireland ($2.22 trillion), Switzerland ($1.38 trillion), mainland China ($1.28 trillion), Belgium ($1.18 trillion), Singapore ($1.12 trillion), Norway ($1.11 trillion), France ($1.08 trillion), Taiwan ($854B), Australia ($804B), South Korea ($804B), Germany ($800B) and others.
Of all foreign-held U.S. securities recorded in this survey period for June 2025—a total value of just over $35 trillion—official institutions accounted for about $6.9 trillion.
