The American Financial Services Association announced on March 2 that it supports a congressional hearing addressing financial fraud and backs legislation aimed at combating credit repair scams.

The association said affordability is a top concern as financial fraud rises and institutions invest in protections against scams. According to the group, "AI platforms generate millions of generic credit disputes that provide little value to consumers but increase regulatory costs passed to taxpayers... The group supports the bipartisan Ending Credit Repair Scams Act to curb repetitive disputes and strengthen the lending market," according to a blog post by the American Financial Services Association.

The issue of credit repair fraud has drawn national attention. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s annual report found that, on a per capita basis, Georgia had the most consumer complaints, followed by Florida, the District of Columbia, Delaware, and Nevada. Many complaints involved credit reporting issues linked to fraud, including deceptive credit repair practices targeting vulnerable borrowers. South Dakota had the fewest complaints per capita, reflecting lower regional exposure to these scams.

TransUnion reported that U.S. lenders’ exposure to synthetic identities, often tied to credit repair fraud, reached $3.3 billion in potential losses at the end of 2024, up 3% from the previous year. Synthetic fraud now accounts for 85% of identity fraud cases, marking an all-time high since 2009, and contributes billions in annual losses. Credit card inquiries showed the highest incidence at over 1%, underscoring ongoing national threats to financial stability.

Founded in 1916, the American Financial Services Association is the primary trade group for the consumer credit industry according to its official website. It represents more than 410 member companies in the consumer credit sector, including suppliers; promotes ethical lending; protects access to credit; advocates for consumer choice; and works with Congress and regulatory agencies on industry interests according to its official website.
