The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) San Angelo District has been recognized for its efforts in using recycled tires to improve local roadways. In recent construction projects, the district repurposed 135,389 old tires into materials for pavement treatments. This approach not only diverted a significant number of tires from landfills but also enhanced the durability and performance of area roads.

TxDOT's initiative is part of a broader effort to use environmentally responsible materials in transportation projects across Texas. The agency works with industry partners statewide to promote sustainable construction and maintenance practices.

The Environmental Achievement Award was given in recognition of these collaborative efforts and their positive impact on communities. TxDOT San Angelo District Engineer Chris Cowen said, "By repurposing materials typically discarded in a landfill, we're enhancing the durability and performance of our roads while also safeguarding the environment."

Across the United States, similar sustainability-focused initiatives are being implemented at various levels of government. For example, new guidance and $7.3 billion in formula funding were recently announced by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration to help states prepare for extreme weather events as part of President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (https://www.transportation.gov/briefing-room/biden-administration-announces-new-protect-formula-program-73-billion-bipartisan). Additionally, more than $2.2 billion from the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program has been allocated to modernize transportation systems nationwide (https://www.transportation.gov/briefing-room/biden-harris-administration-announces-funding-166-projects-modernize-transportation).

TxDOT stated it remains committed to finding practical solutions that meet mobility needs while protecting the environment for future generations.
