Nearly 20,000 American citizens have returned to the United States from the Middle East since February 28, according to a statement released on March 5, 2026 by Assistant Secretary Dylan Johnson.

The figure does not account for Americans who have relocated to other countries or those still traveling back to the U.S. The Department of State has organized charter flights and ground transportation operations at the direction of Secretary Rubio. These efforts are expected to expand further with additional flights and transports scheduled for today.

A Crisis Intake Form has been made available for American citizens in Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Israel. By filling out this form, Americans in these countries can receive information about upcoming charter aviation and ground transportation options.

The State Department’s 24/7 Task Force has assisted over 10,000 Americans abroad by providing security guidance and travel assistance. According to Johnson: "The State Department will continue to actively assist any American citizen abroad, who wishes to depart the Middle East, to do so."

Americans in need of help while in the Middle East are encouraged to contact the U.S. Department of State at +1-202-501-4444 at any time.
