Brookings Institution hosts expert panel on future U.S. Taiwan policy options

As tensions in the Taiwan Strait continue to rise, questions are emerging about whether current U.S. policy toward Taiwan and cross-strait relations remains effective. To address these concerns, the Brookings Institution and RAND’s China Research Center recently organized workshops with leading experts to evaluate future policy options.

These workshops and accompanying policy briefs focused on several key issues: defining U.S. priorities regarding Taiwan, considering ways to limit American commitments while strengthening Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities, exploring diplomatic strategies to stabilize cross-strait dynamics, weighing the pros and cons of a more active denial strategy, and assessing the feasibility of shifting toward strategic clarity in U.S. policy.

On March 23, the Center for Asia Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution will join RAND’s China Research Center in hosting a fireside conversation featuring four of the five authors from this new series of papers. The panelists will discuss different policy pathways outlined in their research and share diverse perspectives on U.S.-Taiwan relations. They will analyze how these approaches could influence America’s deterrence posture, affect Taiwan’s political environment, shape Beijing’s strategic calculations, and impact security across the Indo-Pacific region.

The event is open for both in-person attendance and online viewing. Online participants can submit questions via email.
