President Donald J. Trump issued a message on Mar. 13 recognizing National K-9 Veterans Day, highlighting the contributions of America's working dogs to national security and military operations over the past 250 years.
The statement marks the importance of these dogs in supporting service members and law enforcement, emphasizing their role in keeping the country safe. The president said, "This National K-9 Veterans Day, we celebrate these exceptional dogs for their vital role in keeping our country safe, strong, and free."
Trump recalled that on March 13, 1942, the United States Army established its War Dog Program during World War II with the creation of the Army K-9 Corps. Since then, military working dogs have served in every major conflict and continue to be part of operations on land, at sea, and in the air. He described how candidates for Military Working Dog status undergo rigorous training before being assigned to specialties such as drug and explosive detection or search-and-rescue missions.
The president referenced notable examples from history including General George Washington’s dog during the Revolutionary War; Chips, a decorated dog from World War II; and Conan, who participated in an operation against ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Trump said that today about 1,600 working dogs are deployed alongside human partners worldwide.
He also noted recent acts by police canines like Bo from Gastonia, North Carolina, who rescued a missing child during a blizzard earlier this year. Trump said these acts demonstrate bravery and devotion that enhance law enforcement capabilities.
Concluding his message, Trump stated: "Today, I join a grateful Nation in honoring the enduring legacy, remarkable acts of heroism, and incredible contributions of America’s highly-skilled four-legged warriors."
