U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Brownsville Port of Entry intercepted three live parrots hidden in a vehicle during an alleged wildlife smuggling attempt, according to a March 20 announcement.

The interception highlights ongoing efforts by CBP to prevent the illegal trade of protected species and protect U.S. agriculture from potential threats. Parrots are considered protected species, and their illegal importation can introduce diseases that may harm native wildlife and cause economic damage.

The incident took place on March 13 at the Gateway International Bridge when officers referred a 2007 GMC Yukon for secondary inspection. During this examination, they found three live parrots concealed inside a box within the vehicle. Homeland Security Investigations special agents have started a criminal investigation into the seizure.

Port Director Tater Ortiz said, “Parrots are protected species and our frontline officers work diligently to prevent suspected attempts to smuggle them as part of the illegal animal trade.” Ortiz added, “Exotic birds may carry various diseases not known to exist in the U.S. that could endanger native wildlife and U.S. agriculture, resulting in potential economic harm as well.”

CBP collaborated with partner agencies including the U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to ensure the safety of the birds, which were placed at a local zoo. Parrots are regulated under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) by FWS.

Smuggling birds into the United States is illegal and carries penalties such as fines or imprisonment. CBP continues its agriculture mission at land, air, and sea ports of entry by working with other agencies to prevent harmful pests and diseases from entering the country.
