New Jersey man sentenced for sexual assault on Philadelphia-bound flight

Vernon Baker, a 41-year-old resident of Linden, New Jersey, was sentenced on Mar. 23 to 25 months in prison and one year of supervised release for sexually assaulting a woman seated next to him during a flight to Philadelphia, according to United States Attorney David Metcalf.

The case highlights the serious consequences of sexual misconduct aboard commercial flights and the federal government’s commitment to prosecuting such offenses. The sentence was handed down by United States District Judge Anita B. Brody.

Baker had been charged by indictment in January of the previous year with one count of abusive sexual contact on an aircraft and pleaded guilty in December. According to court filings, the incident occurred on October 30, 2024, during a flight from Los Angeles to Philadelphia when Baker made unwanted sexual advances toward his seatmate. After she refused his advances, Baker exposed himself and attempted to force her into physical contact before grabbing her breast over her clothing and untied her pants. The victim reported the assault immediately after fleeing to the back of the cabin.

The investigation involved multiple agencies including the FBI, Federal Air Marshal Service, and Philadelphia Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Josh Davison and Special Assistant United States Attorney Meagan Gordon prosecuted the case.

This sentencing underscores law enforcement's efforts against crimes committed during air travel and may serve as a warning regarding consequences for similar conduct.
