Cuba man pleads guilty to operating a marijuana grow operation

Daniel S. Ackerman, 59, pleaded guilty on Mar. 24 to possession with intent to distribute 50 or more marijuana plants, according to U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $1,000,000 fine.

The case is significant as it involves the operation and maintenance of a marijuana grow and distribution center in Cuba. Authorities say such activities pose risks related to illegal drug distribution and associated criminal conduct.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Donna M. Duncan said that Ackerman operated the facility on Farnsworth Road in Cuba. Law enforcement executed a search warrant on October 10, 2024, seizing 475 growing marijuana plants, 124 dried marijuana plants, about 2,097 grams of processed marijuana, ten glass jars containing liquid concentrated cannabis, three tubes of concentrated cannabis, psilocybin mushrooms, scales, and multiple cell phones. Investigators also found a 9mm pistol and ammunition at the location.

The investigation was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration under Special Agent-in-Charge Farhana Islam; the Cuba Police Department led by Chief Dustin Burch; the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office led by Sheriff Scott Cicirello; the Olean Police Department led by Chief Ron Richardson; and the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office led by Sheriff Eric Butler.

As this case proceeds toward sentencing or further legal action for Ackerman following his plea agreement before U.S. District Judge John L. Sinatra Jr., authorities continue their efforts against illegal drug operations.
