Naples man pleads guilty to $1.2 million fraud and money laundering targeting elderly victim

Luis Emilio Hernandez, a 45-year-old resident of Naples, pleaded guilty on Mar. 25 to two counts of wire fraud and six counts of money laundering in federal court. The charges stem from a scheme in which Hernandez defrauded an elderly victim out of more than $1.2 million following Hurricane Ian.

The case highlights concerns about financial exploitation targeting vulnerable individuals, especially after natural disasters when many are seeking help with repairs and recovery.

According to court records, after Hurricane Ian struck in 2022, Hernandez persuaded an 85-year-old victim to write personal checks totaling over $1.2 million for construction materials and repairs that were never completed. Instead of using the funds as promised, Hernandez cashed the checks for his own benefit. Investigators found that he did not have a contractor’s license in Florida and had not obtained any permits for the supposed work.

Authorities said that even after the victim sold their home—which was later demolished—Hernandez continued contacting them through text messages and personal visits at their assisted living facility to obtain additional funds. To hide the origin of the stolen money, Hernandez laundered it by purchasing vehicles and trading them at various car dealerships in the area.

U.S. Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe announced that Hernandez faces up to 20 years in prison for each wire fraud count and up to 10 years for each money laundering count. The indictment also seeks forfeiture of more than $1.2 million along with other assets connected to the crimes.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office and United States Secret Service investigated this case, which is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Patrick L. Darcey.
