Farmington man admits supplying fentanyl before overdose death

James B. Link, a resident of Farmington, Missouri, admitted on Mar. 11 to supplying fentanyl to a man who later died from an overdose.

The case highlights the ongoing risks associated with fentanyl distribution and its impact on communities. The incident underscores law enforcement's efforts to address drug-related deaths.

Link, age 31, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Cape Girardeau to one count of distribution of fentanyl. According to court proceedings, Link discussed delivering fentanyl pills with the victim through messages on June 14, 2025. Authorities observed Link’s vehicle leaving the victim’s home shortly before the fatal overdose occurred.

Investigators interviewed Link the following day, during which he admitted delivering blue and yellow pills containing fentanyl to the victim shortly before his death. A search of Link’s residence led investigators to find pills matching those delivered.

Sentencing for Link is set for July 9. He faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine that could reach $250,000 or both.

The Ste. Genevieve County Sheriff’s Office worked alongside the Mineral Area Drug Task Force and Missouri State Highway Patrol during their investigation into this case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Chris Shelton is handling prosecution.
