Mexican citizen sentenced to six months for illegal reentry into the United States

Timothy T. Duax U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa

Christian Vega-Camacho, a 29-year-old Mexican citizen, was sentenced on April 6 to six months in federal prison for unlawfully reentering the United States after being previously removed. The sentencing followed his guilty plea on January 16, 2026, to one count of illegal reentry.

The case highlights ongoing efforts by federal authorities to address unlawful entry into the country and related offenses. Vega-Camacho admitted during his plea that he had been removed from the United States in 2018 but later returned without permission. In April 2021, law enforcement arrested him in Decorah, Iowa, where he was found using fraudulent documents for employment. He was released pending trial but fled custody in June 2021 and remained at large until his arrest in Postville, Iowa, in November 2025.

United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams presided over the sentencing hearing held in Cedar Rapids. Along with the prison term, Vega-Camacho will serve a one-year period of supervised release following incarceration. Federal sentences do not allow parole.

The prosecution is part of Operation Take Back America, described as a nationwide initiative that utilizes Department of Justice resources "to repel the invasion of illegal immigration, achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protect our communities from the perpetrators of violent crime." Assistant United States Attorney Anthony Morfitt prosecuted the case with investigative support from Immigrations and Custom Enforcement's Enforcement and Removal Operations division.

Vega-Camacho is currently being held by U.S. Marshals while awaiting transfer to a federal prison.
