The Trump Administration announced on April 7 that April 2026 will be recognized as National Community College Month, highlighting the role of community colleges in preparing Americans for jobs and supporting economic growth.
This proclamation underscores the importance of community colleges as vital contributors to workforce development and local economies. The administration said these institutions are central to America's efforts in reindustrialization, technological advancement, and global competition.
"For more than 125 years, community colleges have opened doors, powered local economies, and prepared millions of Americans for real jobs and real opportunity. Today, as our nation enters a new era of reindustrialization, technological transformation, and global competition thanks to President Trump, their mission has never been more vital. Community colleges are not just schools. They are engines of economic growth. They are launchpads for the skilled workforce that will build the Golden Age of America," the statement said.
According to the announcement, community colleges respond quickly to changes in industry by training workers in fields such as artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity, energy production, maritime trades, allied health professions, and other skilled trades. The administration noted that these schools use Registered Apprenticeships and partnerships with employers to align educational programs with current job market needs.
The proclamation also pointed out efforts by the Departments of Education and Labor to coordinate investments under federal programs like the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) and Perkins V. It called on states to recognize community colleges as anchor institutions within their workforce strategies.
The statement concluded: "Therefore, we hereby proclaim April 2026 as National Community College Month. We call on citizens, employers, community leaders, and families to recognize and champion the essential role of community colleges in expanding access to high-wage careers...and securing America’s economic future."
