The United States congratulated To Lam on his appointment as President of Vietnam and Le Minh Hung on his election as Prime Minister, according to an April 7 statement.
This announcement highlights the importance the United States places on its relationship with Vietnam, which has grown over more than thirty years. The U.S. described its partnership with Vietnam as a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership built on friendship, mutual respect, and shared interests.
In the statement, officials said they value cooperation with Vietnam in advancing economic prosperity and expanding connections between people from both countries. The U.S. also cited efforts to promote peace and stability in a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
"We look forward to working closely with General Secretary and President To Lam, Prime Minister Le Minh Hung, and the Government of Vietnam to promote peace and prosperity for both our peoples and to continue to make our countries safer, stronger, and more prosperous," the statement said.
The U.S.-Vietnam relationship has included cooperation across several areas such as economic development and regional security. With new leadership now confirmed in Hanoi, observers will be watching how these ties develop further.
