Sioux City man sentenced to over five years for child pornography offenses

Timothy T. Duax U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa

Ry Tyler, a 36-year-old from Sioux City, Iowa, was sentenced on April 7 to more than five years in federal prison after pleading guilty in November to receipt and possession of child pornography.

The case highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement and the Department of Justice to address child sexual exploitation. According to court records, Tyler accessed child sexual abuse materials on Russian websites and discussed his interest in children during a podcast appearance. He admitted to deleting images from his computer that he described as "appalling." A search of his electronic devices uncovered over 2,100 images and five videos depicting child pornography, including material involving infants and toddlers as well as sadistic content.

United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand sentenced Tyler to 66 months in prison followed by a five-year term of supervised release. There is no parole available in the federal system. Tyler remains in custody awaiting transfer to a federal prison.

This prosecution was part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 aimed at combating child sexual exploitation through coordinated efforts among federal, state, and local agencies. More information about Project Safe Childhood can be found at www.usdoj.gov/pscLinks. Resources for internet safety education are also available on the site under the “resources” tab.

The sentence underscores continued attention by authorities toward identifying offenders and protecting victims involved in cases of online child exploitation.
